Why are Coal Miners Still Exposed to Unsafe Work Conditions?

Due to violated safety codes, at least 25 miners were recently killed in a fire in a Montcoal, West Virginia mine. The company that owns the mine, Massey Energy Company, was under federal inspection by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the company now has had a total of 1,342 citations for safety violations. Because the Massey Energy Company failed to provide safe working conditions for their workers, many innocent lives have been lost. Mining companies have a responsibility to protect their employees, and steps need to be taken to ensure that miners are not allowed to work in dangerous conditions.

Toyota has discovered a flaw in 4.2 million of its vehicles that now have to be recalled for safety measures. Designers at Toyota thought at first that the gas pedal of some trucks and cars were becoming caught on the drivers’ foot mats, but they have now declared that the pedals had been getting stuck in accelerated positions due to friction problems and/or water condensation. This is a huge safety issue that must be fixed immediately, and we can only hope that Toyota figures out for certain how these products originally became defective.

Starbucks has decided to recall about 12,000 glass water bottles that have been declared hazardous and unfit for use by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Since these bottles have been reported to shatter and cause cuts to people’s hands, Starbucks is taking back the products and is offering purchasers their refunds in full. Product safety is extremely important, and it is lucky that Starbucks caught this product defect in time to save any others from being hurt.
