Due to violated safety codes, at least 25 miners were recently killed in a fire in a Montcoal, West Virginia mine. The company that owns the mine, Massey Energy Company, was under federal inspection by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the company now has had a total of 1,342 citations for safety violations. Because the Massey Energy Company failed to provide safe working conditions for their workers, many innocent lives have been lost. Mining companies have a responsibility to protect their employees, and steps need to be taken to ensure that miners are not allowed to work in dangerous conditions.
